Free collaboration: Metek, Pythagora, mystified

This project represents an overseas collaboration between 3 artists: Metek, Pythagora and mystified. It was noise guru Metek who initiated the collaboration. Mystified quickly agreed and the talented Pythagora joined in to make three.
Samples were exchanged by cdr across the Atlantic. Metek remixed mystified, mystified remixed Metek, Pythagora remixed mystified, mystified remixed Metek and Pythagora, and so on. The result is an interesting combination of sounds and textures. Variety is definitely a call word for “Metek Pythagora Mystified”, as is quality.

“Mellow Utility” Reviewed

Mystified’s cdr “Mellow Utility” (Ambolthue Records, 2007) received a nice review at the Wonderful Wooden Reasons Webzine ( http://www.wonderfulwoodenreasons.co.uk/ ). More on “Mellow Utility” is here: ( http://www.ambolthue.com ).

“Lower” cdr released

Lower Cover

http://swampsupnostrils.teks.no/krakilsk

supradrone, seething atmospheres, aural ambient

4 euro, 40 NOK(CDr)

“Mystified does it again! Lower is another great example of Thomas Park’s excellence in the field of darker ambient and drone. Music to drift away to, in whatever direction, internally or externally. Far reaching stretched out reverb rich textures with subtle variations and slow but steady progress, steeped in dark drones and transmuted static. . .” — A.K., Krakilsk

mystified mixes Chicago, free Tribe Of Astronauts Release

2 new projects are available for free download:

1. mystified “Big Shoulders” Mix

The “Big Shoulders” mix is named for the “City of Big Shoulders”– Chicago, Illinois USA. The mix is all about my fascination with Chicago. I lived there for 7 years, somewhat sporadically, between the years of 1989 and 2000. My experiences in that city have never left my mind, and related impressions have inspired many a mystified song.
This mix is comprised of 15 songs, mixed into continuous play. The tracks in the mix were written between the years of 2004 and 2007. Some tracks will sound familiar to those interested in mystified net releases, while others appear on limited edition cdrs and cassettes, and will be new to most. As a point of interest, three tracks use sounds created by cars or parts of cars, including “Coming This Way”, “BDrum” and “Down Way Down”. Two pieces were composed using algorithmic sample manipulation– the tracks “Massy” and “Quite Deep”. Many tracks feature such phonographic elements as shortwave static and found drone sounds.
More than anything, these pieces reflect the “Spirit” of Chicago– as a sprawling urban area, with industrial qualities– as a city with notable architecture– buildings that loom and soar– as a city with a history, from gang violence to racial tension to cultural growth. On a personal note, my years in Chicago were especially difficult, for a variety of reasons, including emotional and financial ones. However, I was close to many friends, who today I miss. There were high points to my life there, for sure.
Chicago is the largest city in which I would consider living. Sometimes I have thought about moving back, to this day. The “Big Shoulders” mix is music by someone who has left Chicago, but whose heart is still there.

Note: Special thanks to Mark Jondahl for the cover art ( www.markjondahl.com ).

2. Tribe Of Astronauts– “Missive 2″

“Missive 2″ is a longform remix of the underground ambient hit, “Remote Missive” ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ). Like the original, it is based on space travel, and the idea of taking personal objects on space trips– contraband. This practice has been widespread, apparently, though not condoned by authorities. In this mix, emphasis has been placed on texture and stereo effect. The Tribe hope you enjoy it.

Tortured Static MP3

Hey! A new track is up:

It’s called “Static Shimmer”. A celebration of strained static and tortured drone sounds.

It’s free to stream, so enjoy!

Panned Part Deux

Thomas’ post about being panned, appearing here and on several bulletin boards and Myspace-type pages, had an unexpected response. The tepid review in HH was perceived by some as being not really a “pan” but a description. Others felt that the reviewer was either ignorant in some way or not really into mystified’s genre of music.

Certainly Thomas doesn’t mean to lash out at the reviewer. He has a right to his opinion.

But, all in all, Thomas was amazed and flattered by the groundswell of support he received, both from friends and from people he doesn’t know as well. Many defended his style of music, and particular works, too.

There was a general message in the responses: people like what mystified does (some of them), and you have to be yourself when you write, so don’t let reviews get in your way.

Thomas had no idea people would respond in this way. His Myspace traffic more than doubled the past 2 days, and one board had almost 500 views for the topic, when he usually gets 50-100.

Anyway, thank you to all who have been supportive. Thomas did not mean to “fish” for compliments, but he really appreciates the things people have had to say.

mystified’s “Hazy Waves” on Cloud Valley Recordings

CV-30 - Mystified - Hazy Waves - cdr

9 tracks of thick airy dissonance from Thomas Park. Astral travel glides for the meditative piece of mind. Cd begins with icy calm and dives further into multidimentional plains of being as the music progresses. . . chill out, relax, and take in the mindscapes. . . perfect sounds to calm a mind on edge.

Panned

My music was somewhat panned at Heathen Harvest, in a review of my cdr Solid (W.A.R. Productions). Here is the review:

http://www.heathenharvest.com/article.php?story=20071114205133587

I read the review several times and realized in the end that I agree with a lot of it. Though I don’t find my songs to be boring (as reviewer Perceptron does), I do admit that compositionally they have a certain simplicity. I am more interested in subtle changes and developments in sound rather than larger, more obvious changes, and this has been true for some time.

Basically, his point being that his “naive” ears don’t appreciate the minimal ambient material in “Solid” just reminds me that my music is not for everyone, but for fans of certain kinds of esoteric industrial and ambient sounds.

And when he suggests that people try my music before buying it, I completely agree. Hence:

http://www.myspace.com/mystified

By the way, one small correction– the 19 copies of “Solid” sold out in 3 weeks. I don’t know why Perceptron thought there were more left.

“Forbidden Planet” Teaser

Thomas completed, in 2007, a dedication to the soundtrack for “Forbidden Planet”, a famous set of pieces by the Barrons. Thomas was so impressed with the original soundtrack that, having heard the complete work, he labored for 34 hours with very little sleep, until he had finished his personal dedication.

He recently re-visited his work, and is still very happy with it. Almost as much fun as the original.

Thomas and Noah of Roil Noise Records ( www.roilnoise.com ) have been negotiating cover art for the release. There is no official release date as of yet, but be watchful– it won’t be long.

The cover looks great, by the way. It hearkens back to the original poster art featuring Robby the Robot carrying the Professor’s Daughter, with lurid colors and retro font work a la Noah.
