Special Free Release– This Is Not A Test

TINAT image

This very special release from Treetrunk documents and celebrates an event that happened August 11, 2008 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The event was called “This Is Not A Test: The Chicago Sound Experience”, and was curated by Margaret Noble ( www.margaretnoble.net ). “This Is Not A Test” was one of a series of Audio Picnics at the Pavilion, designed to provide visitors with free and enjoyable audio experiences. The event was quite successfull, drawing a large and attentive crowd. It lasted for 3 hours, from 6 to 9 PM.

Here is what Margaret Noble wrote in the original program notes:

“This evening’s recorded arts concert brings together sound art, spoken word and field recordings from around the world for the sole purpose of listening. These works exist without the accompaniment of visual imagery except for your surroundings. Although many of these recordings have musical elements, these works aim to pull the listener in from a different type of perception which may or may not include patterns, melody or rhythm.

The focus of these works is place, space and narrative as they occur in Chicago and beyond. Some works are historical; others are abstract. Some listeners may choose to listen without expectation by avoiding reading the artists’ notes. In this case, sounds become one’s own interpretation based on independent experience. Other listeners may elect to follow the program notes closely. In this case, artistic technique and vision illustrate the works from the perspective of the creator. . .”

The Chicago Sound Experience

CITY OF CHICAGO
RICHARD M. DALEY, MAYOR

CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS
LOIS WEISBERG, COMMISSIONER

2 pieces by mystified are featured:

6. ‘True Crime’ by Thomas Park / Mystified of St. Louis, MO
Start Time: 6:22:57 PM Length: 4:46 Minutes
“True Crime” is a darkly funny sample collage hearkening back to the days of Prohibition in Chicago.

and the concluding piece:

28. ‘Leaving Chicago’ by Thomas Park/Mystified of St. Louis, MO
Start Time: 8:54 PM Length: 5:10 Minutes
Chicago is a kind of dream city to me, being a place with incredible scenery, architecture, culture, and excitement. After a recent visit, I tried to capture the sadness I felt when leaving this great city by train.

Admission is free, so if you are in Chicago from 6-9 PM on 8/11, definitely think about stopping by the Pritzker Pavilion.

Narcotic Basement Preview Streams

Here are some preview streams from mystified’s new Magnatune release, “Narcotic Basement”. Feel free to surf on in and check the release page.

Narcotic Basement by Mystified

Narcotic Basement on Magnatune

Narcotic Basement Cover

At long last, Mystified’s “Narcotic Basement” is out on Magnatune. Those unfamiliar with Magnatune will want to check this out, as the label offers free streams of the entire album in hi- and lo-fi, and flexible pricing. It’s one of the coolest, most interactive labels on the internet.

“Narcotic Basement” is perhaps the smoothest amongst Mystified’s recent releases. Diverse and interesting sound sources are used, including synthetic drones, unusual field recordings, shortwave sounds and more. A listener to the “Narcotic Basement” album remarked that he “couldn’t stop listening”. Thomas hopes that many people will share in this experience.
