The key words for Tropical Depression are “drone” and “techno”. Netlabel buccaneer Mystified has crafted a mid-length release comprised of punchy, catchy sample patterns laid over oscillating drones. Pieces are narcotic but not without pop value.
The basic theme explored is “trouble in paradise” - even in it’s most relaxed and decadent moments, mankind has its share of issues - Eden had its snake, Hawaii its hurricanes, Florida its oil spill residue. To put this another way - the pieces on this release can be blissful but also dark, and yet this does not diminish their playfulness. The fifth track is a short field recording of a supermarket, given a special audio treatment by Mystified, emphasizing once again a troubled consumerist paradise. A video is included for the first track, “Piece Of Cake”. The video features clips from an old film about making soundtracks and various audio experiments, rendered over a shifting bed of colorful images.

Follow the space captain’s adventures near Alpha Centauri, and his forbidden love for a beautiful rebel slave– a four–part ambient techno suite by experienced artists Mister Vapor and Phillip Wilkerson. The background pads were rendered by Mr. Wilkerson from older fractal midi pieces created by Vapor, then phrases were extracted from the lovely background parts, and given techno sounds. Beyond the beats and other frills, Mister Vapor dubbed in spacey sound effects created by Mr. Wilkerson.

With Complex Silence 6, ambient magician Mister Vapor puts his trademark Industrial Ambient stamp upon the Series. This mesmerizing long-form work has a deeply groaning drone at its foundation, while drifting and whispering higher-toned textures render a swirling, rushing atmosphere. In the middle, the constant, unending hum of a giant generator or cosmic wheel grinds slowly but purposefully onward, sometimes hinting at an unseen darkness or mystery looming somewhere beyond. All these layers mean this piece has plenty of different focal points for your listening pleasure.
Fans of Mister Vapor, as well as fans of Industrial Ambient and Experimental works will no doubt love this fantastic rendition (and decidedly abstract interpretation) of Complex Silence.
